  Dear Northside Family,

It’s football season again. It’s that time of year when we do things because of our love for football that we won’t do for God. Or if we do, we might complain about it in the process. In one of my devotional readings, Chuck Swindoll talked about this very subject. He said, “I’ve often wondered what would happen if people were as intense and committed and determined about church as they are about sports or any number of pastimes. This was reinforced some years back in a Moody Monthly article which illustrated twelve excuses a person might use for ‘quitting sports.’ The analogy isn’t hard to figure out.”
  1. Every time I went, they asked for money.
  2. The people with whom I had to sit didn’t seem too friendly.
  3. The seats were too hard and not comfortable.
  4. The coach never came to my seat and talked with me.
  5. The referee made a decision with which I could not agree.
  6. I was sitting with some hypocrites who only came to see what others were wearing.
  7. Some games went into overtime, and I was late getting home.
  8. The band played numbers that I had never heard before.
  9. The games are scheduled when I want to do other things.
  10. My parents took me to too many games when I was growing up.
  11. Since I read a book on football, I know more than the coaches anyhow.
  12. I don’t want to take my children because I want them to make up their own minds later about going to games.
Swindoll then asked, “What would happen if we approached church responsibilities with the same enthusiasm we give our hobbies, sports and other extracurricular activities?” It’s something to think about.
