Week of January 28, 2019

Dear Church family,

Sometimes God will go to great lengths to give one of His creatures the opportunity to come to Christ. First of all, almost twenty-one years ago now God called me to pastor this church. Years later Ed Davidson was required by his employer to move to Vestavia Hills where he served as president of the local Pinnacle Bank. From time to time when Ed knew that I would be in Birmingham visiting in hospitals, he would call me and invite me to lunch. Probably about ten years ago, one of the places he took me was Demetri’s in Homewood. It didn’t take me too long to figure out that the best waitress there was a woman named Rita. I made it a practice to only sit in her section. About three years ago, I gave her a copy of The Purpose Driven Life with the suggestion that one day after her shift we would discuss the book. She eagerly agreed. Years passed and the Holy Spirit began to remind me of the plan to discuss the book. I wanted to do more than discuss the book. I wanted to tell Rita about the love of God and His Son Jesus and how Jesus had died for her on the cross, making atonement for her sins. We agreed to meet on January 10 in the afternoon after her shift. Well, as some surgeries do, the one I was in Birmingham for on this date didn’t get started on time. Imagine that! This past Thursday I was back in Birmingham for another surgery at the very same hospital, and this one did get started pretty much on time. I went to Demetri’s to eat a late lunch and when I asked Rita if we could possibly meet after I finished, she readily agreed. So back in the owner’s office I laid out the claims of Christ, and Rita prayed to receive Christ understanding that He loved her enough to die for her.

I asked myself some “what if” type questions. What if God didn’t move me from Cuba to Jasper? What if Rita didn’t work at Demetri’s? What if God had never moved Rita from New York to Alabama to go to school? What if Pinnacle Bank had not moved Ed and Anne to Birmingham? What if Ed had never taken me to Demetri’s? God did do all those things. But what if God had not loved us enough to send His Son to this earth to die for us? And what if Jesus had not been willing to die for Rita, for me or for you? God did love us enough and so did His Son. Now it is up to us to befriend someone and share that good news with them so you will have a similar story. - Bro. David

The beginning date for the requirements to be met is this Sunday, February 3rd. - Bro, John

What are you going to do tomorrow? I’d be willing to bet that you have an answer. I don’t know many people who have no plans on any given day. Most people I know usually have a list of things they need to get done. If repairing something in your house is on your list, I assume you’ve already thought about the other steps needed to accomplish that task. You need to buy the required parts and you need to get your tools together. If cooking a pot roast is on your list of things to do tomorrow, you’ve probably planned to go to the store to buy the ingredients and made time to prepare them and put them in a crock pot. With those steps in mind I have a question for you. Is talking to someone about Jesus on your to do list? What have you done to prepare for that? Do you have a plan to speak to someone specifically? Have you prayed for that person? Do you know how you plan to share Jesus with them? Will you share with them your testimony? Will you give them a handout with Scripture on it? It’s often been said that to fail to plan is to plan to fail. If you really want to lead someone to Jesus, don’t just wait for God to open a door. Be prepared to walk through that door when the opportunity arises. -Bro. Shawn

Fun - Games - Refreshments. Sponsored by our GA Girls. Wednesday, February 13 at 6 PM in the Fellowship Hall. Sign up here or in the foyer by February 10th.

All 2018 contribution statements have been mailed.

Nominations will be received through Sunday, February 3. “All church members, 9th grade and older, will be given an opportunity for nominating men for deacon. A list of those men currently serving is provided at the bottom. A person being nominated must first be asked if he is willing to serve as a deacon. All eligible men nominated, who are 21 years and older, have been Christians at least (5) five years and have been members of Northside Baptist Church for at least (3) three years will be considered. Men who previously served as a deacon at Northside Baptist Church, left the church in good standing and returned his membership back to Northside Baptist Church shall be eligible for nomination after one year (e.g. moved due to job reasons or called to serve at another church.) Having been deemed qualified by a screening committee composed of the active deacons, up to twice the number of men needed to be elected for the year (who qualify and agree to serve) will then be put on a ballot for election.”

Pray about who you will nominate. Ask that person if he is willing to serve. If he agrees, place his name on the ballot you will find on the foyer table. Fold your form one time and place it in the envelope on the secretary’s door.

Men currently serving (and therefore uneligible for nomination) are: Rick Brown, Josh Pavlovec, Craig Hendon, James Davidson, Ed Davidson, Glen Gravlee, Emmett Green, Kenny Horton, Blake Walton, Justin Robinson, and Mike Gibson.

We express our sympathy to Sonny Posey and family in the death of his mother, Eva Mae Posey. Mrs. Eva Mae served as organist at Northside for more than 50 years. Her father, Rev. J. P. Drummond, was Northside’s very first pastor.
